"In Cabalistic lore, the 'Lords of Unbalanced Force,' demonic entities from a former universe who have survived into the present one: the Qlippoth originated as the ruling powers of a universe that came before this one, a realm of unbalanced force that was destroyed in the early stages of the creation of the cosmos... sometimes pictured in Neoplatonic terms as the last link in the chain of emanation, the furthest thing from God that still has enough of the divine creative power in it to exist at all... The Qlippoth in their totality make up the Sitra Achra or 'Other Side,' the realm of the demons." (John Michael Greer)
Some relate it to the Tree of Life "as the bark relates to the living wood of an actual tree... the natural and necessary result of the organic process of creation, like excrement, the dregs of wine, or the dross that remains after gold has been refined."
It is suggested that evil is the manifestation of the Sephirah Geburah (Severity) out of the proper balancing power of Chesed (Mercy).
According to Isaac Luria, the well-ordered process of Creation was interrupted by disaster and the vessels containing the seven Sephiroth (Chesed to Malkuth) became inadequate, shattered in the descending current of creative light. It is from these vessels (shards) brought to life through the sparks of divine light still caught up in them that the Qlippoth came into being. His theme describes the rescue of these sparks of light from their imprisonment within the Kingdom of Shells.
"In each of the Four Worlds are the Ten Sephiroth of that World, and each Sephirah has its own ten Sephiroth, making 400 Sephiroth in all – the number of the letter TAU, The Cross, The Universe, the Completion of all Things." (Golden Dawn, Fifth Knowledge Lecture)
THE QLIPPOTH
"The evil persona of a man is in the Sphere of the Qlippoth, and the devils are the Microcosms of the Macrocosms of the Qlippoth. This evil persona hath its parts and divisions, and of it the part which toucheth the Malkuth of the Nephesch is its Kether. Tremble therefore at the evil forces which be in thy own evil persona. And as above the Kether of a Man are his Angelic and other forms, so below the Malkuth of the Evil Persona are awful forms, dangerous even to express or think of." (Fifth Knowledge Lecture)
"Therefore even the Evil Persona is not so evil when it fulfileth its work. For it is the beginning of a dim reflection of the Light unto the Qlippoth, and this is what is hidden in the saying that Typhon is the brother of Osiris... Evil helpeth forward the Good. When the evil Sephiroth are expelled from the Nephesch into the Evil Persona, they are, in a sense, equilibriated therein. The evil persona can be rendered as a great and strong, yet trained, animal whereupon the man rideth, and it then becometh a strength unto his physical base of action." (Fifth Knowledge Lecture)
The Qliphoth, Qelippot or Klippot - (Heb.) literally peels, shells or husks, from singular: qliphah 'husk' [The Kabbalah or, The Religious Philosophy of the Hebrews Adolphe Franck translated by I. Sossnitz (1926): Relation of The Kabbalah to Christianity page 279]
"The sense of the Qlippoth as a natural part of existence reaches its zenith in the Zoharic comment that everything is a 'shell' or 'husk' when seen from a higher level of existence, and the kernel in the shell when seen from a lower one." (John Michael Greer)
The Qliphoth, Qelippot or Klippot are "the representation of evil or impure spiritual forces in Jewish mysticism." (The Book of Concealed Mystery translated by Samuel Liddell MacGregor Mathers)
Within Qabalah, there are two realms of the Qliphoth, the [3] completely impure and the [1] intermediate. These four 'concentric' terms are taken from Ezekiel's vision (1:4), "And I looked and behold, A WHIRLWIND came out of the north, A GREAT CLOUD, and A FIRE INFOLDING ITSELF, and A BRIGHTNESS was about it..." The first three are the "Three Impure Qliphoth" (completely Tamei 'impure') while the intermediate 'shining Qliphah' (Nogah 'brightness') is the 4th, mediating as the first covering surrounding holiness, and capable of sublimation.
According to Aleister Crowley, the three evil forms (before Samael), are said to be Qemetial, Belial, and Othiel. (Liber 777 by Aleister Crowley)
According to Israel Regardie, the qlipothic tree consists of 10 spheres in opposition to the sephiroth on the Tree of Life. These are also referred to as the "evil twins." They are also the "Evil Demons of Matter and the Shells of the Dead."
