There are common threads throughout the occult, parallel to the numerous world religions. It is the oneness of mankind, of all of us, of everything. The reconciliation of opposites being its goal; it is balance, equilibrium. It is God.
"The soul goes round upon a wheel of stars and all things return... Good and evil go round in a wheel that is one thing and not many. Do you not realize in your heart, do you not believe behind all your beliefs, that there is but one reality where men melt into Man and Man into God?" (G.K. Chesterton, The Dagger with Wings)
"No one is a black magician in his own eyes, and modern occultists, whatever their beliefs and practices, think of themselves as high-minded white magicians, not as sinister Brothers of the Left-hand Path… Aleister Crowley, was regarded as a black sorcerer by many other occultists, and his rituals are saturated with sex and blood to an extent which, to put it mildly, scarcely fits the normal conception of white magic. But he himself professed nothing but contempt for black magicians." (Richard Cavendish, The Black Arts)
"God is the ideal identity of a man's inmost nature... the Great Work is the raising of the whole man in perfect balance to the power of infinity." (Aleister Crowley)
As Above, So Below
"All the phenomena of the universe are aspects of some one thing which underlies and connects them... It is the One, or God... The universe and everything in it constitutes God. The universe is a gigantic human organism, and man is a tiny image of it, a toy replica of God." (Richard Cavendish, The Black Arts)
One
"Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is ONE!" (Deuteronomy 6:4)
"There is one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all." (Ephesians 4:6)
"He is the one God hidden in all beings, all-pervading, the Self within all beings, watching over all worlds, dwelling in all beings, the witness, the perceiver." (Hinduism, Svetasvatara Upanishad 6.11)
"All this is God. God is all that is." (Sufism, Sufi writings)
Evil
"The great forces cannot be described as either good or evil. They have a good side and an evil side, or in occultists' terms a positive and a negative aspect. The evil side is the province of powerful evil beings called 'demons' ... The good side, correspondingly, is the province of the 'angels' or beneficent spirits." (Richard Cavendish, The Black Arts)
"...there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God." (Rom 13:1, KJV)
"I form the light, and create darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the LORD do all these things." (Isaiah 45:7, KJV)
The Doctrine of Opposites
"The magician's search is for this 'something' which underlies and connects the opposites, the mysterious One which reconciles all diversity in unity. The path to the One lies through the reconciliation of opposites... The Greeks called a perfect balance between opposites 'justice', and magicians have a correspondingly high regard for exact balance and equilibrium." (Richard Cavendish)
"The stock occultist's example of progress through the reconciliation of opposites is the union of male and female (the two opposites) which results in the creation of new life." (Richard Cavendish, The Black Arts)
Balance
"And it shall come to pass in that day, that the light shall not be clear, nor dark: But it shall be one day which shall be known to the LORD, not day, nor night: but it shall come to pass, that at evening time it shall be light."
(Zech 14:6-7)
"I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me." (Romans 7.21)
"You shall have a perfect and just weight, a perfect and just measure..." (Deut 25:15) "A false balance is an abomination to the LORD, but a just weight is his delight." (Prov 11.1) "You shall have just balances, just weights, a just ephah, and a just hin..." (Leviticus 19.36) "A just balance and scales are the LORD's; all the weights in the bag are his work." (Prov 16.11)
Divinity is found throughout
"No one has such powers but he who has cohabited with the elements, vanquished nature, mounted higher than the heavens, elevating himself above the angels to the archetype itself, with whom he then becomes co-operator and can do all things." (Cornelius Agrippa)
"...and if children, then heirs of God and JOINT HEIRS WITH CHRIST, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together." (Romans 8:17, NKJV)
What is a 'joint-heir' or a 'co-operator?' It is a 'co-heir.' It is a position of equality. Jesus thought it not robbery to be 'equal' with God, the Father... UNITED with the family, sharing one common vision of the Father.
"who, being in the form of God, DID NOT CONSIDER IT ROBBERY TO BE EQUAL WITH GOD" (Philippians 2:6, NKJV)
"I said, 'YOU ARE GODS, And all of you are children of the Most High.'" (Psalm 82:6, NKJV)
The Glory of the Lord is found in the mirror
"For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known." (1 Cor 13:12)
"But WE ALL, WITH UNVEILED FACE, BEHOLDING AS IN A MIRROR THE GLORY OF THE LORD, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord." (2 Cor 3:18)
The Image of God
"But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, ARE BEING TRANSFORMED INTO THE SAME IMAGE from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord." (2 Cor 3:18)
The Temple
We are the [spiritual] Temple. The Temple is where God resides. The Temple is the [spiritual] Garden of Eden. It is the [spiritual] New Jerusalem within us all
"They serve at a sanctuary that is A COPY AND SHADOW of what is in heaven..." (Hebrews 8:5)
"God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth, dwelleth not in temples made with hands..." (Acts 17:4)
The Temple Within
"The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you." (Christianity, Luke 17:20-21)
"What the undeveloped man seeks is outside; what the advanced man seeks is within himself." (Confucianism, Analects 15:20)
"If you think the Law is outside yourself, you are embracing not the absolute Law but some inferior teaching." (Buddhism, Major writings of Nichiren Daishonin, vol. 1, On Attaining Buddahood, 3-5)
"If human beings knew their own inner secrets, they would never look elsewhere seeking for happiness and peace." (Sufism, Sufi writings)
"God bides hidden in the hearts of all." (Hinduism, Katha Upanishad 2)
"God is in thy heart, yet thou searchest for Him in the wilderness." (Sikhism, Guru Nanak, vol. 1, 330)
When He appears [in us] we shall be like Him [God].
"...when he appears, WE SHALL BE LIKE HIM..." (1 John 3:2, NIV)
"That all of them may be ONE, father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us... I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be ONE as we are ONE: I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity..." (John 17:21-23, NIV)
